ISO/TC 211 Geographic information/Geomatics January 2001 International Organization for Standardization Technical Committee 211
What is ISO/TC 211? Standardization in the field of digital geographic information. Standardization in the field of digital geographic information. This work aims to establish a structured set of standards for information concerning objects or phenomena that are directly or indirectly associated with a location relative to the Earth. This work aims to establish a structured set of standards for information concerning objects or phenomena that are directly or indirectly associated with a location relative to the Earth. These standards may specify, for geographic information, methods, tools and services for data management (including definition and description), acquiring, processing, analyzing, accessing, presenting and transferring such data in digital/electronic form between different users, systems and locations. These standards may specify, for geographic information, methods, tools and services for data management (including definition and description), acquiring, processing, analyzing, accessing, presenting and transferring such data in digital/electronic form between different users, systems and locations. This work shall link to appropriate standards for information technology and data where possible, and provide a framework for the development of sector-specific applications using geographic data.
Norsk metadatastandard som en profil av ISO Metadata profile set of one or more base standards and/or profiles, and, where applicable, the identification of chosen classes, conforming subsets, options and parameters of those base standards, or profiles necessary for accomplishing a particular function [adapted from ISO/IEC TR :1998] NOTEA profile is derived from base standards and other profiles so that by definition, conformance to a profile is conformance to the standards and profiles from which it is derived. Hva er en profil?
Eksempel på metadata profil Profile of hydrographic chart metadata Comprehensive dataset metadata from ISO This figure illustrates a simple profile. ISO defines over 300 metadata elements, with most being listed as optional. This wide range of possible metadata elements may address all types of geographic information. However a particular community of users may only require a subset of the available metadata elements. In this example profile addressing hydrographic charts might select only a small part of the overall metadata standard. The figure shows how the content of metadata of hydrographic charts may be defined as a selection of concepts and schema structures from ISO This collection may be defined in a profile, called, in this example, "profile of hydrographic chart metadata".

Andre initiativ - FGDC metadata “Metadata” are Gold for Spatial Information Management l Metadata are descriptive elements that characterize an information resource l Used with Z39.50 Catalog techniques, offers exacting capability for search – much better than search engines on the web l If there are “data” there can be “metadata” or data about data
FGDC FGDC Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM) l Published in 1994 as a cooperative national effort l Provides common content model for descriptive information for geographic data l Contains detailed structure to accommodate desired level of description l Guidance on what’s optional and repeatable
FGDC FGDC Metadata is Going Global l International consensus being built on structured metadata within a broader Geomatics Standard under ISO TC 211 l ISO (draft) reflects existing metadata standards efforts l Specifies content, like FGDC Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata
