Multiresolution Gjennomsnitt V0 V1 V2 V3 V4 Differens W0 W1 W2 W3 Bildet 'Lena' er mye brukt i litteraturen i tilknytning til bildebehandling. Bildet er et gråtonebilde (eller et fargebilde hvor alle tre RGB-verdiene er like). Vi tenker oss at bildet er delt opp i pixler (punkter). På bildet vises en rad av pixler (pixlene er noe forstørret for å kunne vise prinsippet). Nederst er tegnet et søylediagram som viser gråtoneverdien (i intervallet [0,255]) for hvert pixel i denne pixel-raden. Høy søyle svarer her til høy pixel-verdi eller lys gråtone, mens lav søyle svarer til lav pixel-verdi eller mørk gråtone. Dette søylediagrammet kan gi oss en del informasjon om denne pixel-raden: Høy søyle svarer til lys gråtone. Lav søyle svarer til mørk gråtone. Tilnærmet like høye søyler plassert ved siden av hverandre: Dette svarer til tilnærmet samme gråtone, kanskje kan disse på en eller annen måte erstattes av en 'fellessøyle' og på den måten gi mulighet for komprimering av bildet, dvs fjerne noe data fra bildet uten at nevneverdig informasjon går tapt.
