6 www.ntnu.no/prc European Palliative Care Research Centre (PRC) WHOs definisjon av palliasjon Palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problem associated with life- threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual. Palliative care is applicable early in the course of illness, in conjunction with other therapies that are intended to prolong life, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, and includes those investigations needed to better understand and manage distressing clinical complications. http://www.who.int/cancer/palliative/definition/en/

7 www.ntnu.no/prc European Palliative Care Research Centre (PRC) Behandlingsintensjon Kurativ = helbredende –Kombinerer gjerne flere modaliteter Neoadjuvant/ adjuvant Palliativ = lindrende –Livsforlengelse –Symptomforebygging –Symptomlindring –Omsorg ved livets slutt

9 www.ntnu.no/prc European Palliative Care Research Centre (PRC) Hva kjennetegner god palliasjon?

«Aggressive medical interventions in the last weeks of life, such as emergency room visits, hospital and intensive care unit admission and death, and chemotherapy administration, are generally considered to be indicators of poor-quality-care» Hui et al. 20 20 www.ntnu.no/prc European Palliative Care Research Centre (PRC) Kommunikasjon

–«Telling what the patient want to know» –«Telling what the patient need to know» –«Translating information into terms that the patient can bear» Usikkerhet rundt hvordan kommunisere dårlig prognose virker stressende på legen Redsel for at feil prognostisering vil bli brukt mot dem

27 www.ntnu.no/prc European Palliative Care Research Centre (PRC)

Empathy –Ta del i pasientens reaksjoner. Forhold deg aktiv til pasientens emosjonelle respons. Summary –Summèr opp. Legg strategi for videre handling.
