FIGUR 8 It is, however, beneficial to grow fish compare with land animals. To grow one kg of beef we need 7 kilos of feed, one kg of pork we need 4 kg of feed, one kg of poultry, we need 22 kilos of feed but only 1,3 kg of feed to produce one kg of fish. In other word we utilize protein, lipids and carbohydrates much more efficiently when we produce fish instead of other meats. Humen consumption Industrial fisheries Aquaculture

20 FORDELING AV KRILL I NORDOMRÅDENE

21 FIGUR 17 In our waters, The Norwegian Sea and the Barent Sea the biomass of copepods, Krill, amphipods, shrimps and mesopelagic fish is estimated to 350 mill tons. This is one order of magnitude more than the total volume of raw material for the global fishmeal and oil industry. If it is possible to harvest 1% of that biomass we would be able to produce nearly tons of marine lipids which would give an increase of more than 30 % to the yearly production of fish oil. The rationale to harvest at a lower tropic level is clear and covered by others in this conference. Before we consider harvesting the oceans at lower trophic levels we need to develop systems for ecosystem management based on scientific surveys to advice governmental authorities to manage the harvest on sustainable principles. We made a joint project between The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) and The Norwegian Herring Oil and Meal Industry Research institute (SSF) in Bergen in order to collect data to see if it was possible to harvest Zooplankton cost efficiently and if a harvest of Zooplankton from the ocean could be economical feasible.
