The archivist ... tends to be scrupulous about his neutrality, and to see his job as a technical job, free from the nasty world of political interest: a job of collecting, sorting, preserving, making available, the records of the society. But I will … argue that the archivist, in subtle ways, tends to perpetuate the political and economic status quo simply by going about his ordinary business. His supposed neutrality is, in other words, a fake. (Zinn, 1997, s. 522) 2

For archivists, this may mean recognizing the impossibility of neutrality while accepting the responsibility of professional objectivity. This seeming contradiction involves applying appropriate standards of archival principles while seeking to overcome many centuries in which archives strengthened the rulers and marginalized the powerless classes. (Jimerson 2009, s. 295) 3

DocNow responds to the public's use of social media for chronicling historically significant events as well as demand from scholars, students, and archivists, among others, seeking a user-friendly means of collecting and preserving this type of digital content. DocNow has a strong commitment to prioritizing ethical practices when working with social media content, especially in terms of collection and long-term preservation. This commitment extends to Twitter's notion of honoring user intent and the rights of content creators. The project is a collaborative effort among the University of Maryland, University of California at Riverside, and Washington University in St. Louis.
