15 The International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) was established in 1992 and is the official humanitarian relief and development agency of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of North and Central America. In seeking to provide assistance to those in need, IOCC’s fundamental goal is to build sustainable local capacity to effectively carry out emergency and/or long-term socio-economic development programs. IOCC always respects the dignity, values, history, religion, and culture of the people served by its programs without bias to political, religious, gender, ethnic, or socio-economic groups. In 2002, IOCC began its partnership with the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East (GOPA) and, in 2007, started collaborating with the Department of Ecumenical Relief and Development (DERD) to implement humanitarian aid programs. DERD was established in 1986 with the purpose of supporting GOPA’s many community-based projects. In 1999, DERD was officially registered with Syrian authorities. Since March 2012, IOCC/DERD has been providing relief aid to displaced and conflict-affected populations within Syria. IOCC/DERD has access to 10 out of the 14 Syrian governorates; due to security reasons, Quinetra, Idleb, Raqqa and Deir El Zour are not accessible. There are 28 IOCC/DERD field offices with more than 500 staff and volunteers: Aleppo (1), Daraa (3), Sweida (2), Hasakeh (2), Hama (1), Homs (4), Lattakia (1), Tartous (4), and Damascus (10). All offices work closely with local community leaders, churches, the leadership and organizations of other faith groups, and with local secular community-based, UN agencies and non-governmental organizations. Since the beginning of the crisis, DERD has built on its relations with grassroots and local non- governmental organizations (NGOs) to facilitate emergency services, including needs assessments and selection of beneficiaries. DERD is an implementing partner of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA), and is part of the different sector working groups administered by the UN. 500 ansatte og frivillige
