The idea is that it is better to have heard/seen the information at least once and go back and check that you haven’t forgotten something rather than missing something you were expected to find on a web page. Should you lose your way on the road to the USA/Canada, the checklist provided should get you back on track. Felles veiledning

3 Canada: Partner Universities: Memorial Univ. of Newfoundland*
Ryerson Polytechnic University of Alberta University of Calgary Université Laval* Univ.of Waterloo* ( ikke for AB/Architecture) Univ.of Winnipeg* * mulig fritak for skolepenger Students have also gone to: British Columbia Inst of Tech. Concordia University Dalhousie University Malaspina Univ. College McGill University Simon Frasier Univ. Univ. of British Columbia Univ. of Lethbridge Univ. of New Brunswick Univ. du Québec a Montreal Univ. of Toronto Univ. of Victoria Despite the fact that there are few formal agreements between NTNU and Canada NTNU students study abroad at numerous universities in Canada. There are excellent web sites to help to find out which university in Canada offers the program you are interested in. ***One particularly good link for this purpose is: *** There are some early deadlines for some of NTNU’s partners in Canada. See: Some links for other universities (eg. UBC) where NTNU doesn’t have an agreement are given on (TIP for using table: Read column headings then search for university.) Hvor kan/bør jeg dra?

Se : The number of universities in the Canada/U.S.A. offering a full tuition waiver to NTNU students is limited. The reason for this is that NTNU partner universities can often not offer a tuition waiver unless one of their students has is studying at NTNU (ie “balanced exchange”). Typically there are more Norwegian students interested in studying in the USA than there are American students interested in coming to Trondheim. The exchange is then considered out of balance and until NTNU receives a student from the university, no NTNU students will be accepted as exchange students. In some cases students can attend the university and pay tuition, but this is not always the case (eg the University of Oklahoma) Budgeting considerations will also affect the number of tuition waivers NTNU’s partners can offer. Because of these factors the number of tuition waivers will vary from year to year. The above list is updated as additional information on tuition waivers becomes available. This list is subject to change.

After you have decided which university you want to attend you will need to check if they have the courses you need/want and then ask your faculty for Permission to study abroad = Forhåndsgodkjenning. ASK yourself: If I attended NTNU next semester/year which required courses would I have to take (=obligatorisk fag)? Which electives (= valg fag)? - In most cases you will find information on your program requirements in the NTNU course catalogs: - Next : find out if the university you selected offers courses which cover the material given in the required courses at NTNU. If it doesn’t you will either need to either 1) select another university or 2) see if you can «juggle» your schedule so you can take a required course at NTNU prior to your going abroad or after you’ve returned. - Most students end up changing their original plan for a variety of reasons (course not offered, course full, interest changed etc). Be certain to check that there are alternative courses you can take. If you have any changes you should contact your academic advisor to make certain the change(s) will be approved. TIP! Most universities will have an on-line schedule where you can check how many places there are in a given course and how many places are/were available. Be certain to check this! For some universities the schedule link is given in the «OVERVIEW Table». For others, just use the university’s search engine with the key word: SCHEDULE . The link should turn up. If not, try google. Exception: California State University – Monterey Bay (CSUMB), UC Davis and to a certain extent CSU – Los Angeles. Prior to arrival you will be told which courses you have been admitted to. Please note!! Degree seeking students are admitted to courses first. Exchange/visiting students are admitted on a space available basis.

6 Forhåndsgodkjenning: Hvor mange fag må jeg ta?
OBS! Krav om full studiebelastning pr. semester Skal ta fag tilsvarende 60 studiepoeng (et år)/ 30 SP(et semester) Konverteringsnøkkelen =GNAG databasen gir oversikt over antall credits/units som tilsvarer 60 studiepoeng. One of the most frequently asked questions is «How many courses do I have to take?» NTNU requires that you take a course load that corresponds to 60 ECTS credits (=studiepoeng(SP)) for one academic year/ 30 SP for et semester. Information on how many courses are required to fulfill this requirement is found in the GNAG database: Your faculty will check your application for study abroad to ensure that you have selected enough courses and then notify you that your program has/has not been approved.

7 Forhåndsgodkjenning:
2. Se Utenlandsstudier: «Slik søker du» Følg også INSTRUKS fra fakultetet HUSK å laste opp forhåndsgodkjenningsskjema! Samme søknaden gjelder også for: - stipend administrert av NTNU - å bli tatt i betraktning for studieplasser ved avtale universiteter After you have decided where you want to study abroad, when you want to go and what courses you want/need to take you need to formally apply for permission to study abroad. Use the on-line application form: found on Be certain that you read the instructions carefully! In some cases there are specific instruction for students in certain faculties, eg Humanities/Social and Educational Sciences/Engineering/ Information Technology and Electrical Engineering/Public Health See:

8 Hvordan søker jeg til universitet i utlandet?
Avtale: søk gjennom NTNU (exchange student) Uten avtale: søk selv non-degree/visiting student (study abroad student) If you apply to one of NTNU’s partner universities the Office of Int’l Relations (OIR) will advise you about the application process and send your application. If there is no agreement between NTNU and the University you are applying to you will have to find out which application form to use, what enclosures to send, when the deadline is and then send the application. In most cases you will apply as a non-degree/visiting/special student, although in some cases you need to apply as a transfer student. If you are applying on your own, don’t panic! The application process is basically the same as with partner universities, except you have to do the work. Using the standard list of enclosures provided in this presentation and checking if you need to send any additional materials you will find the application process quick simple. In all cases start by gathering your enclosures in a folder and then when the time comes to send the application you can just sort the enclosures and send them. NOTE: You may not need all the enclosures listed in this presentation

9 Hvordan skal jeg finansiere oppholdet?
Lånekassen Stipend Egne midler For some universities you will have sufficient financing through the State Educational Loan Fund, Norway (Lånekassen) If the support is NOT SUFFICIENT to cover your tuition and living expenses you will need to document other funding sources, eg stipends, personal funds or funds being contributed by a generous family member.

10 Lånekassefinansiering (2018-19: per akademiske år )

Les mer om krav til språkkurset. Valutajusteringer for skolepengerstøtten og tilleggsstipend The support from the State Educational Loan Fund, Norway consists of support to – Living expenses Travel Tuition + premium tuition («tilleggsstipend») to selected institutions Language courses For amounts: see above and NOTE: You will need to present receipts for all travel, tuition and language courses. Application fees are considered as «tuition» so send this receipt too.
