All HFC’s and PFC’s have high global warming potential which in fairness is less of an issue in the US and other parts of the world - but is becoming a major politically issue in Europe. For info. The difference between this slide and the next is this one covers total flooding applications (such as those protected by halon 1301), whereas the next covers the streaming applications (such as those protected by halon 1211 in portables) The first series of testing that I did with 3M concentrated on turning a natural streaming agent (a liquid) into a gas. We have been successful in doing this but still have work to do and will be working further on this during the next series of tests.

One area in particular where there exists a huge market potential is in Marine applications. Still the most common halon alternative is CO2 - due to it’s cost advantages over the other alternatives but it kills people and therefore where the owner is more concerned about his crew than the cost, most opt for FM200 because of its significant weight and space advantages over the inerts. But there is reluctance to use FM200 in Marine systems for two primary reasons 1. Fears that it may become the next halon and get banned eventually 2. At diesel fuel extinguishing/design concentrations (8.7%) safety margins are seriously eroded - this was the main justification for our previous excursions with the previous ultra safe 3M products.

Whilst we still have testing to do that will confirm exact quantities of agent required the first signs are that it will be similar to FM200 - the most popular halon alternative in the world. We will need to work to get appropriate design concentrations to keep costs comparable with FM200. The next series of tests (I am scheduled to go to 3M w/c 11th June), will allow us to establish class A concentrations which are expected to make the weight comparison similar to FM200
