Redusere antall applikasjoner Redusere antall DB Redusere antall Domener

5 Hva driver en konsolidering
For mange OS > 5 For mange servere – typisk Administrasjon Software distribusjon Time to market for nye app. Uoversiktlige software lisenser  Slutt på support – NT 4.0, eller annet

6 Forretningsproblem You start losing track of servers
Easily done if you have dozens or hundreds dispersed over several locations. The flip side of this is knowing where a server is but not knowing what it does. You don't have enough administrators Someone has to look after all those servers. The more you have the more likely you are to run short of skilled people to maintain them.

7 Forretningsproblem You are running more than five operating systems
The rule of thumb is that one person can know two operating systems reasonably well. Any more than that and you face a dilution of expertise. Once you get up to five you are seriously stretched and vulnerable. You have difficulty controlling software licenses Complex, dispersed environments = a tangle of software licenses. If you fail to comply, or forget to buy them in the first place, you could face prosecution.

8 Forretningsproblem You think it's cheaper to buy new servers than to do capacity planning A classic warning sign. It's nearly always cheaper to plan properly than to buy new kit as a knee-jerk reaction to increased demand. If you think otherwise, you probably need to consider consolidation. Your utilization rates for more than half your servers are in single digits Most of your servers are idle for 90 per cent of the time, but you are paying to administer and maintain them 100 per cent of the time.

15 Single Workload Consolidation
MGB 2003 4/7/2017 1:23 AM Single Workload Consolidation Exchange messaging Exchange 2000 gir nye muligheter for serverkonsolidering, flere brukere pr server 300% Exchange 2003 gir større muligheter for site konsolidering med mer effektiv transport NT 4 Domain konsolidering NT 4 Domains er lite flesible bl.a administrasjon PDC / BDC problematikk Windows server 2000 & 2003 er langt enklere å administrere, skalerer bedre og er mer WAN effektive. About 70% of the server consolidation projects Microsoft does today are on single – homogenous workloads. Microsoft has proven best practices, packaged services, and customer success stories from single workload homogeneous server consolidation with Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000 family products. File and print servers are one of the most common areas for server sprawl. W2K is 135% faster than NT. Windows Server 2003 is 100% faster than W2K, according to Net Bench. Databases as back ends for applications have multiplied quickly for many companies and so have database consolidations. Business unit autonomy and the need to quickly deploy new applications have been primary drivers. An example is a global financial services company that consolidated all of their Sybase, Oracle and SQL databases onto SQL The consolidation reduced their operating costs $6.4 million per year with reduced management costs and improved efficiencies. Two limiting factors of Exchange 5.5 was the low users per server ratio, and server backup time. Exchange 2000 provides the messaging consolidation to offload storage and run multiple databases. This capability enables 3 times the number of users to be consolidated on a box. Microsoft’s internal IT group consolidated from 1000 users on an Exchange 5.5 box to 3750 users on an Exchange 2000 box. Compaq did the same thing (prior to the merger with HP), and cut $1.4 Million from their annual operating budget. NT4 domain structure was inflexible and resulted in the deployment of many domains per business unit or Group policy. Every time a customer needed a different security policy or had an additional group defined – they would establish another domain controller. Companies are aggressively consolidating domains into Active Directory.GE Medical implemented Active Directory on Windows Server 2003 and reduced autonomous domains from 70 to 4.

23 Hetrogen /Multiple Workloads
MGB 2003 Hetrogen /Multiple Workloads 4/7/2017 1:23 AM Verktøy Hardware partitioning (HP, IBM, Unisys) Virtualization (Virtual Server) Resource Management (WSRM) Best til Very high-throughput applications Complete isolation of applications Low-throughput applications Legacy applications Medium-high throughput applications Manages resource usage Key point: There are three key technologies that help companies consolidate heterogeneous workloads: Hardware partitioning, workload management and virtual machines. Let’s take a moment and spend some more time on each of these technologies. What is in it for the customer: Customers can choose the most appropriate application consolidation tools to meet their business requirements. Script: Hardware Partitioning Hardware partitioning is where a server is physically partitioned into to 4 processor increments, each partition runs its own instance of the operating system, The following OEM’s provide 4 processor partitioning on there 64 proc, 32proc and 16 proc Intel based Servers, HP, IBM, and Unisys. Hardware Partitioning is best for very high throughput applications that require complete isolation at an Operating system and hardware level. The limitation is that you have to reboot the server to change the size of the partition and it has to be done in 4 processor increments. So unless you have a failover server, this will result in an interruption of service. Additionally, you will have to plan for peak workloads, which means less than optimal server use. Resource Management Resource management enables the allocation of resources, including processor and memory resources, among multiple applications based on business priorities on a single server. This is ideal for medium to high throughput applications, where you are hosting multiple workloads and you want to prioritize use of resources. Windows System Resource Manager allows an administrator to set targets for the amount of hardware resource that running processes or users (typically in a Terminal Server environment) are allowed to consume. When running multiple applications on a single server, WSRM can be used to assign some part of the computer's resources to each application. This allocates each processes access to system resources and reduces the ability of applications to interfere with each other, allowing multiple applications to better coexist on the same system. The limitation is that all applications must run on the same operating system version. Additionally, the application is not completely isolated in its own operating system or hardware. This can be a single point of failure for multiple applications. Virtualization Virtualization is a software technology that allows multiple operating systems to run on the same processor at the same time. This capability allows IT organizations to migrate and consolidate applications from legacy operating systems to current hardware and software platforms, thus ensuring standardization and supportability. Additional applications include the quick creation of new configurations for testing, training, demonstrations, etc. Virtualization enables savings on hardware, environmental costs, management, and administration of the server infrastructure. Microsoft Virtual Server ensures users of high supportability, broad hardware support, high performance, and manageability. Best For Virtualization technology primarily addresses two business needs: The need to support legacy applications: legacy applications require older, often obsolete operating systems. Procuring and maintaining hardware that supports obsolete operating systems is problematic. Also, when support for the operating system is finally withdrawn and no new fixes are produced, organizations face costly choices on how they will address security issues if any emerge. Upgrading or re-writing applications for a current version of the OS may not be economical, or the resources needed to do so may be occupied with higher-priority projects. The need to consolidate legacy applications: many business applications run on under-used servers. IT organizations want to improve performance and optimize hardware, space, and power by consolidating these applications onto fewer more powerful servers. The problem is that, frequently, these applications were not written to co-exist on the same server. Applications may require different versions of the operating system and of the database and other middleware. Applications may consume all of a certain hardware or software resource on the system, thus preventing other applications from performing acceptably. Sometimes the same situation occurs due to so-called “memory leaks” (due to poor programming) and a reboot will eventually be needed to free up the memory. IT organizations want to avoid the cost and time involved in re-writing applications so they can be consolidated. Each Virtual machine is limited to a single processor, hence we recommend this solution for lower through-put applications. Limit The application management overhead is centralized, however still requires management by application and the required skills and knowledge of each application, hence application management can be more complex. Running multiple virtual machines (VMs) on a single server, has a performance tax, depending on the number of VMs hosted. Begrensning Re-sizing partitions requires a reboot Capacity in 4-proc increments More complex management Performance “tax” All applications must run on same OS level OS/HW single point of failure
