1 About critical attitude when reading Lill Kristiansen, Prof. Dr. Scient Department of Telematics, NTNU lillk@item.ntnu.no Material was originally written for ttm4160, but most of it has general relevance, though the examples are related to that course

2 The basic critical questions Who wrote this? Which company is s/he working for? Where is this published, status of the document? A well reputated journal or good conference, or a small national conference? By a research team only, or approved by business management? Which pros and cons are listed? Which are not listed?!!! On references: Which relevant references are defined by the authors to be irrelevant (explicitly defined to be irrelevant) Which relevant references are missing? (implisitly defined to be irrelevant)  This question goes as much for academic research as for papers by ’industry’! In general, also usefull to ask yourself: When was this written? Is it outdated? Was this just ’hype-of-the-day’ inside a small community?

3 Critical questions to standards Status of the document? A contribition to a standards meeting: Most likely approved by upper management or qualified technical team within own company An official document in a standards body (like 3GPP):  even as draft: approved by ’community’  As a formal final document: approved by formal body Which standards body? A big one (3GPP, IETF) or an ’obscure’ one (created by 2-3 industry partners to promote a specific solution) Is the body open to anyone, or ’by invitation only’? Parlay: was by invitation only, but final specs fully open JCP: Java Community Process? Which rules apply?  During the process and then the spec. has been frozen

4 Example 1 Lill Kristiansen and her paper at TINA2000 http://www.item.ntnu.no/~lillk/presentations/TINA2000-A.ppt She was then working for Ericsson (IP telephony) She used her background as a TINA-member to get her paper accepted Title 1: Implementing TINA ideas  To be accepted in the session ”Implementing TINA” Title 2: A user centric approach to multi media, and how it supports TINA ideas)  To tell about the IPT system  (Which is by no means a TINA compliant system) Is her references to standards complete? 3GPP and ETSI Tiphon are relevant standards, but are some missing, e.g. OMG work?

5 Example 2: J2ME information Information will often originate from Sun, even if quoted from someone else. Who is Suns main business enemy? Citation: ’Independence from device manufacturers’ Means also: As long as the device support Java Critical questions:  Are you bound to a specific operating system, like Symbian?  Are you able to integrate non-Java-applications, and at what cost

6 Example3: Microsoft.net passport Citation*: Microsoft.NET Passport is an online authentication service that provides a convenient way for you to sign in to multiple Internet sites by using only one member name and password.... Passport stores information...as your name, country, and postal or ZIP Code—in your.NET Passport profile. Many sites ask for this information when you register with them. Critical questions: Must the other sites run.NET and MS operating system? Or is this a general open mechanism that all websites can offer?

For alle andre? Hva hvis disse 3dje partene ikke spør.passport om denne infoen, men i klartekst spør barnet selv? F.eks. via ’smarte spørsmål’ finner ut av barnas interesser, kjønn, fødselsår o.l. (’social engineering’) osv. * samme kommentar som på forrige side ** En Engelsk versjon finnes her: http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2000/02- 08passport.mspx (aksessert 16.4.2009) Men se også f.eks. http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2002/08/microsoft.shtm (aksessert 16.4.2009) http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2000/02- 08passport.mspx http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2002/08/microsoft.shtm
